Oakland Athletics Expect Kyler Murray to Enter the NFL Draft

Two-sport University of Oklahoma star Kyler Murray was drafted 9th overall in last year’s MLB draft by the Oakland Athletics.  Now, according the San Francisco Chronicle, the Athletics expect the Heisman Trophy-winning QB to also declare for the NFL draft where he could potentially be a high draft pick again.

The 21 year-old has until Monday to declare for the NFL draft.  Choosing to enter the NFL draft does not mean Murray is guaranteed to play in the NFL and the A’s will still retain his professional rights since he has a contract with the team.

If Murray does choose to forgo his contract with the Athletics and join whichever football team drafts him he would have to return his $4.66 million signing bonus.  According to multiple reports that is a real possibility since they are stating Murray is more likely to choose football.

His choice does have a time limit if he wants to join the NFL since the A’s spring training begins on February 15th and it is highly doubtful that Murray would be able to both go through spring training and prepare for the NFL scouting combine at the same time.  Murray said he would, “like to play both if possible” but just like him I don’t think it is possible. If Murray tries out the NFL and wants to go back to baseball the A’s will still retain his baseball rights.
