Early Saturday the Chicago Bulls, Orlando Magic and Charlotte Hornets finalized a three-way trade involving Jerian Grant, Julyan Stone, Timofey Mozgov and Bismack Biyombo. The two names that matter for the Chicago Bulls are Grant, who they sent to Orlando and Stone, who they received from Charlotte.
The Bulls received Grant from New York as part of the Derrick Rose trade and he has under performed for the Bulls since, only averaging 8.4 points per game last season in a limited role. According to Vincent Goodwill, the Bulls have already waived Stone in a move that was made to save money, clearing the contracts of Stone and Grant.
This move puts a lot of confidence in the abilities of Cam Payne since he will be the primary backup to Kris Dunn moving forward. Payne looked like a terrible misevaluation in his first season with the Bulls. However, last season Payne showed improvement and an ability to quickly push the ball up the court. Though I’m still not sold on Cam Payne and doubt he will be in the league long, the Bulls have enough confidence to use him as their backup moving forward.
